Wine Facts & Trivia

Discover the fascinating history, hidden secrets, and unique stories behind Dalmatian winemaking.

💡 Trivia #1

Did you know that Hvar has the most sunny hours in Europe?

With an average of 2,726 hours of sunshine per year, Hvar is officially the sunniest island in Europe. This incredible microclimate is exactly what gives local grapes their rich, concentrated sugars, resulting in world-class, bold red wines like Plavac Mali.

💡 Trivia #2

Did you know that Zinfandel actually originates from Kaštela?

For decades, the true origin of America's famous Zinfandel grape was a mystery. In 2001, DNA profiling proved that Zinfandel is 100% identical to an ancient, nearly extinct Dalmatian grape from Kaštela called Crljenak Kaštelanski (or Tribidrag).

💡 Trivia #3

Did you know that Dalmatian vines grow out of bare stone?

In regions like Primošten (Babić grape) and Pelješac (Plavac Mali), vines grow in incredibly harsh, rocky terrains. Local winemakers literally have to break the stone to plant the vine. This forces the roots to go up to 10 meters deep to find water, creating an incredibly rich, mineral taste.

💡 Trivia #4

Did you know that Croatia has over 130 indigenous grape varieties?

Despite its small size, Croatia is a bio-divine goldmine. From Pošip and Grk on Korčula, to Kujundžuša in Imotski and Malvazija in Istria, the country offers an incredibly unique wine tasting journey that you cannot find anywhere else in the world.

💡 Trivia #5

Why does Dalmatian wine pair so perfectly with local food?

It is all about 'terroir'. Our robust, high-tannin red wines cut beautifully through the richness of traditional Dalmatian Peka or aged Pag cheese, while our crisp, mineral whites perfectly complement fresh fish pulled straight from the Adriatic Sea.
